Rakesh Maria has all of a sudden been expelled from his post as the Commissioner of Mumbai Police and persuade as Director General of Home Guards with prompt impact on Tuesday.
While the Maharashtra government has said that the progressions have been made considering the law and order situation in front of the up and coming celebration season in the state, there are numerous speculations for the sudden transfer. Many police offices believe that Maria’s transfer is a consequence of the part he played in the investigation of the Sheena Bora murder case.
Mr Maria’s removal came after he told reporters the previous evening that DNA tests have decisively settled that Sheena Bora, 24, was the daughter of Indrani Mukerjea, one of three individuals arrested for the murder of the 24-year-old girl in April 2012. After that, Mr Maria had a late night meeting with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who, according to sources, disapproved of the zest shown by Mr Maria in handling the inquiry.
“Maria has been promoted to the director general rank and posted as the DG of Home Guards in Mumbai in place of Ahmed Javed. Javed (who was DG-Home Guards) becomes the new CP of Mumbai,” additional chief secretary (home) K P Bakshi said.
He said that post of Mumbai police commissioner has been upgraded to ‘director general’ rank post.
He said Maria, a 1981-batch IPS officer, had been transferred with “immediate effect” and that Javed, also a 1981-batch IPS officer, will take over as the new CP on Tuesday itself.
“His transfer is as mysterious as the Sheena Bora murder case. But, it appears that the investigation into the case over last few weeks might be one of the reasons that could have played a role in the transfer,†a senior police officer said.
